Westlake Apartments

Westlake is a filthy, disgusting place. We moved in only because we had just arrived and had no credit score — now it’s obvious why they let people in so easily. They never returned our security deposit, just took all of it with no real explanation. Constant noise, dirt, and total chaos. The electricity was shut off multiple times. The heating is gas, and that’s a separate nightmare: if you turn on the gas and try to actually heat the apartment, be ready to pay an extra 200–300 dollars. So either you live in the cold, or you pay like an idiot just to not freeze. On top of that, the service is terrible, nobody responds to complaints, and the heating regularly didn’t work — we froze for real about five times. We rented a one-bedroom apartment on the first floor, and in total it ended up costing almost three thousand dollars a month. For what — completely unclear. In the lobby there were constantly some sketchy people hanging around, rotten fruits and vegetables were lying around like in a dump, and some homeless guy was sleeping in the laundry room. It’s unsafe, neglected, and completely run down. Terrible service, terrible place, terrible buildings. This isn’t just bad — it’s hell on earth, and we’ve never lived anywhere worse. Do not come anywhere near this place.

It is a good place to live, however in recent months many very dirty people have moved and in addition to the liveliness of those who have motorcycles, monopolizing public parking lots… it is incomprehensible that many of us work from very early and arrive at the house at 6-8 PM! And we don’t have parking spaces because of these living people who go to work after 5PM and leave their stalls saved. Additional the private stand inside Westlake costs 150 dollars ! In addition to that, almost all motorcycle owners live in the same house!! And if we park in the houses in front, the police will fine you for everything! I have almost 1000 dollars in fines because of this problem

DO NOT MOVE HERE — Westlake Apartments is a nightmare

If you’re thinking about living in Westlake Apartments (Southgate region) reconsider immediately. This place is absolute trash. I’ve lived here for over a year and I swear I’ve paid way more than anything close to this should cost—and for what, exactly? Complaints beyond belief — here they are in brutal detail:

Maintenance & Safety Issues

The elevator buttons are broken constantly. It is rickety and makes unsettling noises as you travel up and down. Not to mention that the operating permit is nearly two years expired—it is a Saw trap waiting to happen. I sympathize with the handicapped tenants who cannot utilize the elevator when it is out of commission.

Laundry room almost always has issues. The machines will stop working mid-cycle leaving your clothes soaking wet or half dry. Repairs will take long enough to the point where you cannot even use the laundry room as they turn the machines off or lock the room entirely. The machines have broken down even after they were supposedly “repaired.”

Hallways/stairwells: filthy, disgusting biohazard trash bags left around, sometimes blood that doesn’t get cleaned. That’s not minor — that’s a safety and sanitation risk.

Lobby door is broken, garage door handle broken — you can walk into parts of the building you shouldn’t because they can’t be bothered to fix basic security infrastructure.

Drain in the bathtub does not work properly. Bathroom vanity sagging so bad that your toiletries roll off of it. Toilet bowl takes forever to fill. Cheap vertical blinds that snap on the first tug. The walls are built crooked — crooked installations everywhere: outlets, appliances, phone lines, etc.

Skylight leaks water and dirt. Lighting is minimal, dim — one weak indirect light in kitchen and bathroom hallway. Enough to strain your eyes.

Parking & Towing Hell

You pay for parking, but there are no reserved spots. They don’t regulate number of cars per unit. So parking is constantly scarce.

If you try parking elsewhere — near restaurants or nearby businesses — you’ll get towed predatorily. I’ve lost over $1,000+ from this.

They issue permits you can’t get, or that don’t mean anything because nobody enforces anything prior to towing. Residents don’t have enough spots because non-residents fill them, but you are still punished.

Cost vs What You Get

You’re paying $3,000+ for a one-bed, one-bath and you get zero amenities except a laundry room that barely works. All utilities are billed separately.

Appliances are outdated, yellowed covers, ugly fixtures, crooked installs. The style is old. Everything is cheap.

Carpets everywhere in the hallways — stained, filthy, smell bad, never deep cleaned.

Residents & Environment

Strange/needy residents who stare at you in their car when you’re trying to park. One time someone tried to cut in front of me/wait behind me. Always weird tension.

Domestic abuse incidents and loud arguments — walls are paper thin. Good luck sleeping.

Popcorn ceilings. Near restaurant dumpsters smell horrific. Seagulls flock because of the trash smell, they poop on cars parked close.

Management & Responsiveness

Zero accountability. Maintenance requests are ignored or “temporarily fixed” (band-aided stuff) then ignored again.

No notice before towing. No explanation for how the permit system works. No enforcement of rules on anyone except paying tenants.

They’d rather redo superficial things than fix serious issues (elevator out of service, leaking, safety.)

Overall judgment

This place is overpriced, mismanaged, unsafe, and grimy. It’s one thing to tolerate inconvenience, but this is neglect across the board. If you have any other options, pick elsewhere. If stuck here, document everything, because management never does.
